Why is Life So Hard? Vol 5: God’s Statues

This fifth book in the series Why Is Life So Hard? explores the wisdom and beauty of God’s statutes as seen in Psalm 119. This brilliant poem offers a variety of benefits in what God has made known about life, about his world. When he wrote it, the psalmist used different words to capture truth. “Statutes” sounds very formal, very official, doesn’t it? So it’s amusing that its root not only sounds like axe, it actually means to chop with heavy blows. It comes from the fact that in ancient times, rules were engraved in stone by striking it. A good visual for the enacting of something by established authority. This is comfort to us rather than pressure to perform, because in the face of troubles what really strengthens us is the hope that whoever is in charge is a good someone. God’s unchanging statutes assure us that while our struggles may be our own, the solutions existed long before we came into this world, and will endure beyond our current afflictions.
